When should I contact a moving company to schedule my relocation? For domestic moves if you need to move this week we can probably accommodate your request. If you require a written in-home estimate, you should contact us at least two weeks prior your move. We generally ask you to give us as much notice as you can. For international moves please contact us as soon as you know that you're going to be moving overseas. The more lead time you can give to planning your international move will ensure that we are more likely to meet your requested dates. Generally you should plan on contacting us approximately seven to ten weeks prior to your intended date of departure. This will allow sufficient time pre-book international transportation services, obtain necessary documentation and provide you with information relative to your new location. In addition, begin to think about separating items to be sold, stored, disposed of, given away, moved by sea, moved by air or delivered to another family member before your departure. You should have a clear idea about these categories before completing the pre-move survey. What are my responsibilities? In brief ... Be present during the packing and loading of your belongings. It is advisable to take personal responsibility for jewelry, cash, and other high value items. You will need to check and sign the inventory of your belongings after the loading is complete. You will again need to check off the inventory during the delivery to ensure all items originally tendered to the driver have been delivered. Can I pack myself? While most people opt for packing services for long distance moves many decide to self pack for local moving. Please be aware of the potential problems that can occur. For instance, valuation coverage will not apply on goods packed by their owner, unless the exterior of the box is damaged. It is your responsibility to check the cartons upon delivery for any damages. Can I leave my clothes in their drawers? Yes, you can. Just be sure not to leave anything solid that can damage the piece. Also if you have any liquids such as perfumes or candles that could melt please remove these items as the mover is not liable for any damages that may occur. How will my automobile be transported? Most of the time, we can take your car(s), truck or SUV with the rest of your belongings in the trailer or container. If this is not possible, we will arrange for an alternate method. We do not transport cars as part of a regular local move.
For domestic moves your goods are covered by valuation. On local moves you receive valuation coverage of 30 cents per pound, per article at no additional charge. For interstate shipments you receive valuation coverage of 60 cents per pound, per article at no cost. You may elect to purchase more valuation coverage by declaring a full replacement value of your goods. You are charged a premium based on the declared amount. The premiums vary with your type of move. Valuation does not cover items such as acts of God or war. Other exclusion may apply. How can I purchase insurance for my international move? Hollander is able to provide you with coverage for your household and personal effects during an international move. When establishing a value for your goods in general you should think about what it would cost to replace your personal effects in the country of destination. When completing your international valuation documents, please be as detailed as possible. This is especially important when marking down individual items that have a high replacement cost. What are the items that are NOT recommended for inclusion in your household goods shipment? You should refrain from moving any perishable goods and anything that could leak during its journey as it can cause significant damage to the articles surrounding it. You should NOT include the following items: Hazardous materials such as gasoline, propane, any petroleum products, aerosol products, bleach, ammonia, batteries, lighter fluid, or any other corrosive, explosive, or flammable materials. Anything that can deteriorate should also not be shipped. If you have any questions as to what should and should not be included in your shipment talk to your Customer Service Representative at Hollander as soon as possible. When I arrive at my new location whom should I contact to determine the status of my shipment? Your Customer Service Representative will serve as your single point of contact throughout the move process. However, prior to your departure we'll provide you with the contact names and details of our agent in the destination city to which you are moving in case you need to reach them directly or in the event our office is closed. Shipment updates will be given to you at regular intervals throughout the relocation process. Where should I go to find current information regarding Customs clearance documentation requirements? We will provide you with the most current information that we have available however regarding the documentation necessary for your shipment to clear customs. It is ultimately your responsibility to contact the local Consulate or Embassy of the country to which you are moving to verify the documentation that is needed to obtain duty-free entry of used household goods and personal effects.
